School Council

WHITTIER SCHOOL COUNCIL MINUTES
November 13, 2019 7:00 a.m.
 
Present: Michael McLucas, Nancy Sutera, Kimberly Cerbone, Cara Fidalgo, Daniela Faia, Ben Francavilla, Kristen Harris, Carlene Holloway, Tammy LaRosa, Joseph Lento, Laurence Arinello
Absent: Anna Denning, Elizabeth DiCarlo, and Pierrette Revangil
 
SCHOOL SAFETY: Mr. McLucas reviewed the recent procedure for shelter-in place, due to a police matter in the neighborhood, with the School Council. He informed the Council of concerns regarding students and families walking from lower Broadway and Bow Street and safety concerns at Sweetser Circle, including efforts to obtain a crossing guard for that location.
 
SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN: Mr. McLucas informed the School Council members that the School Improvement Plan presented to the School Committee on October 21, 2019, and approved. The Council was informed that the plan will be updated per data collected throughout the school year.
 
DATA INFORMED INSTRUCTION: The Council was notified that teachers are co-planning and co-teaching with English Learners teachers and Special Education teachers to offer supportive measures for all learners. Formative assessments through Exit Tickets are used to assess and analyze student learning.
 
EMPOWERING GIRLS CONFERENCE: The Council was informed that Ms. Disario, Guidance Counselor, would be supervising five eighth grade girls selected to attend the annual Empowering Girls Conference on Wednesday, November 13, 2019, as part of a district-wide initiative.
 
STUDENT OF THE MONTH AWARDS CEREMONY: The Council was notified that the next Student of the Month Awards Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, November 26, 2019, at 9:30 a.m. This special recognition is awarded for academic excellence and growth.
 
HERITAGE DOLL PROJECT: Mr. McLucas discussed the Heritage Doll Project, where students are creating doll that reflect their ethnicities, which will be hung in our foyer to celebrate our diversity.
 
ENGLISH LEARNERS PROGRAM: Mr. McLucas informed the Council of the learning objectives and language objectives used to support English Learners. Where the learning objectives outline what students will be learning, the language objectives provide criteria for how students will learn through speaking, listening, reading and writing.
 
SPECIAL EDUCATION: Mr. McLucas and Mrs. Sutera informed the Council of co-planning between the regular education teachers and Special Education teachers through co-planning and co-teaching.
 
TITLE I: Mrs. Faia, Data Coach, informed the Council of the i-Ready assessments and the resources for teachers and students per reading and math scores. She indicated that the Kindergarten math assessments were recently completed. Mrs. Faia also outlined the value of the i-Ready tools to support teachers and students.
 
NEW BUSINESS: The Council discussed the idea for the MCAS ice cream party and PTO account.
