As part of Hispanic Heritage Month, Whittier School Special Education teacher and Equity Team Member Mr. Robert Sansone reached out to the Everett Police Department to see if local police officers of Hispanic descent would be willing to lead a discussion with our 5th and 6th graders. The EPD did not disappoint! Our students learned about their upbringings and nationalities; some were former soldiers in the United States military. Some questions and answers were conducted in Spanish, then translated. The police officers strived to make this a comfortable and less formal discussion, so no microphones were used. Through their questions, answers and interactions it was evident that our students and police officers made valuable connections.
